Truth Is Heroic

John 8:32: And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

We all remember scenes of a woman being tied up on a railroad track by a villain. As a train is heard and seen rapidly approaching, a hero comes right on time and cuts her loose and saves her from a certain death. We have all heard about people saved from drowning. Perhaps some reading this have been saved from that. My oldest brother was an expert swimmer. He rescued several people from drowning.

When I was a child I had a terrifying experience. I mistakenly jumped into water that was over my head in a swimming pool. There were three or four ropes separating the shallow water from the gradually deeper water. I miscounted the ropes. I had not been in swimming pools more than a couple of times before and could not swim. I was under water and inhaled some of it. I could not call for help. I flailed my arms wildly. In my own power I could not possibly have gotten to the side of the pool. The life-guard apparently didn*t see my dilemma amidst the splashing of others. After inhaling a lot of water, I found my arms holding onto the side of the pool as I coughed up water. I have no doubt that God somehow used the flailing of my little arms to move me those few steps to the side of the pool. As I look back on that experience, realize that God saved me from drowning. I now realize that He was my hero.

He has saved me from other things. He has saved me from the Lake of Fire. He has also saved me from a wasted life. Those that never come to Christ are never saved from the Lake of Fire. Neither are they saved from wasted lives. Even those of us who have received Jesus waste much of the lives He has given us. With His help we don*t have to.

John 14:6: Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

The Lake of Fire is a prison with no way of escape. Receiving Jesus is the key that keeps men from the Lake of Fire and unlocks the gates of Heaven. Jesus is heroic.

John 17:17: Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

When we neglect the Bible we neglect the truth that can set us free in this life. No other truth can set us free like the Bible can. When we neglect the Bible we keep ourselves in a spiritual prison. If we have access to a Bible, the cell-door is wide open. I remember a phrase from a country western song: I*m in a Prison Without Any Walls. Staying in a spiritual prison by neglecting the Bible wastes much of a Christian*s life. A life without the Bible in it is worse than a prison cell. The Bible is the key to the freedom of our souls. The Bible is heroic.
